Elihu was the son of John and Priscilla Starbuck Coleman. He was a minister of the Society of Friends. While he was yet a young man, was one of the earliest advocates of emancipation in America, and wrote articles stating his displeasure in the keeping of slaves. The home of which Elihu built and in which he lived is still standing, and evidence of the thoroughness of its construction and the excellence of the Nantucket timber of which it was built. On 10-06-1720 Elihu married Jemima Barnard b. 9-14-1699 d. 12-29-1779, she was the daughter of John Barnard and Sarah Macy Barnard. Childen were Ruth b. 9-09-1721 d.5-25-1763, Eunice b.10-18-1724 d. 12-28-1768, Phebe b.6-10-1726 d. 12-1797, Anna b. 12-24-1728 d. 11-03-1769, Priscilla b. 8-15-1731 d. 10-04-1770, Mary b.7-25-1733 d.????, Abigail b. 9-21-1735 d.????
