Edward was baptized on February 2, 1615/6, probably in the Church of St Mary in Ivinghoe, England. His death was most likely in 1699 shortly before his will was probated on September 23 of that year.

Edward was first married to Jedidiah Skidmore, daughter of Thomas and Ellen (Whitehead) Skidmore. Edward and Jedidiah were married in about 1647 shortly after they both moved to the new settlement at Pequot Harbor, now known as New London, Connecticut.

Edward's parents were John and Ursula (Blacknote) Higbed. Edward's father John lived his entire life in Ivinghoe, England.
