Studio portrait of 1375 Acting Corporal (A/Cpl) Fred Henry Dowel. A farmer from Jumbunna, Victoria prior to enlistment, A/Cpl Dowel embarked with the rank of Private with the 1st Reinforcements, 29th Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Ascanius on 10 November 1915. Later promoted to Corporal he was accidentally wounded and evacuated to hospital. Following his recovery he re-joined his battalion and was wounded in the head and left buttock and evacuated to England. After recovering he again re-joined his battalion and was promoted to Sergeant and was Mentioned in Despatches "for gallant services and devotion to dutrilty", Once more wounded in action he was evacuated to England and due to the severity of his wound he returned to Australia on 12 December 1918 and was medically discharged. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a permit to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War.
Distinguished Conduct Medal 28.8.1917
Mentioned in Despatches 20.9.1917
Citation:- At Beaunetz on 23rd March 1917, Corporal Dowel displayed coolness, initiative and bravery.
He and his Lewis Gun Team were stationed on the bank of a sunken road on the right flank of his Company, which was holding Beaunetz. Early in the morning of 23rd, the enemy counter attacked in force. Two of their Companies temporarily forced back a weak platoon on the right of Beaunetz, and came down the sunken road towards the village.
A machine gun which was covering the road jammed, but Corporal Dowel, who was at this time out of touch with his officer's, gave the necessary fires orders to his gun team in a cool and collected manner, and by his initiative prevented the enemy penetrating the village at this point, inflicting severe losses on them.Shortly afterwards, Lieut Harrison counter attacked. Corporal Dowel was sent back with an important message, which he delivered and, although wounded, returned and remained on duty until the situation was clear.
