William McClanahan was born January 26, 1783, in Botetourt County, and was a soldier in the WAR of 1812. His war record in the National Archives states he "enlisted in Amsterdam, Botetourt County, Virginia, July 11, 1813, and served until October 10, 1813, as Private in the Virginia Militia under Captain Joseph Hannah and Colonel James McDowell. The Veteran died March 26, 1866, in Craig County, Virginia, at the age of 83 years and two months. His widow applied for pension under the Act of March 9, 1878, and the claim was allowed, *her residence being Craig County, Virginia*. She was 78 years of age at the date of application.


William McClanahan's Will was written 20 Nov 1862, and is found in Will Book A, page 438, in the Craig County Courthouse. He names his wife, Margaret, and his seven children.
