On Friday morning, October 26, 1923, occured the death of Darius H. C. Gaige in the village of Quaker Street. In the passing of Mr. Gaige the entire town of Duanesburgh suffers the loss of one of its most ardent workers along political church, and social lines, a stalwart republican, and never failing in his devotion to his church and always ready to promote any and all social functions of his community. He was born of Quaker parentage but rendered most valuable service to the Christian church in our village. He was a member of Noah Lodge F. and A. M. of Altamont and a most enthuastic worker in the Quaker Street Board of Trade. He entered the business of D. D. McDonald and Son in 1888, served his town as justice of the peace for several terms, and was appointed Post Master of Quaker Street in 1897, which position he held until his death.
Mr. Gaige was born November 4, 1852, the son of Isaac and Elizabeth Carey Gaige, also a descendant of Captain Darius Carey of the Revolutionary War. He married Miss Melaura Dusenbury November 28, 1877 and leaves to mourn his loss besides his widow Harry I. Gaige Albany, Mrs. L. F. Crowe, Schenectady, Mrs. C.B. Wilber, Baltimore, MD and the Mrs. Marthena Coralinn and Geraldine Gaige of Quaker Street, a sister Mrs. Lucia Carpenter of Seneca, Ill and several grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at his late home, on Monday afternoon, with Rev. D.B. Patterson officiating. Burial was at Grove Cemetery where masonic services were held. There were many beautiful floral tributes from organizations and friends.
