1942 GRADUATE IS LUZON CASUALTY
Garland Johnston Dies on April 22

Friends have learned today that Pfc. Garland A. Johnston, a 1942 Mexia High School graduate, died April 22, 1945, from wounds received in the battle of Ipo Dam on Luzon. He was serving as an infantry machine gunner at the time.
Inducted into the Army in July 1943, he was sent overseas in November, 1943. Some of the places where he saw service include New Zealand, New Guinea, New Caledonia, and the island of Luzon in the Philippines.
He is the son of Mrs. Gladys Johnston, 819 East Arlington St., Fort Worth. Also surviving are one brother, E. J. Johnston, Jr., and three sisters, Al "Nella" Hancock, Mrs. James Stapleton and Mrs. Zadena Hancock, all of Fort Worth, a brother-in-law, Sgt. Harold Winston Hancock, of Mexia, was killed on June 19, 1944 in the initial invasion of France.
