Katherine Elizabeth DeWald, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Lohmann, was born July 19, 1864. In 1878 she came with her parents to America, settling in Russell County on a homestead about 12 miles southwest of Russell. Her father was school master before coming to America and was first school-master in this area in Russell County.

In 1881 she married John George DeWald and moved to their homestead near Otis, KS. To this union were born 12 children: David and John of the home; Mrs. Lydia St. Aubyn, Russell; Mrs. Bertha Wenger, Rawlins, WY; Mrs. Amelia Kelly, Laramie, WY; Mrs. Martha Harrop, Orlando, FL; Dan, Casper, WY; Mrs. Clara Krug, Russell; Eva of the home and Robert of The Dalles, OR. Two sons preceded the mother in death; Walter dying in infancy and Henry in 1940.

In March 1898, the DeWald family moved to their farm home in Winterset township of Russell Co. Her husband died May 12,1931. Since 1935 she made home with son and a daughter in Russell. Here she passed to the Heavenly Home on Sunday morning, May 21, 1950, at the age of 86 years, 9 months, and 2 days.

She leaves to mourn her decease, the sons and daughters before mentioned; 36 grandchildren; 38 gt. grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Henry F. Meyer of the home.
