E. Hubert was the first born in the family and since early childhood displayed ambitions of becoming an artist and left Russell to attend the K.C. Art Institute in K.C., MO when a call came for American boys to volunteer their services to serve their country. In June 1918, E. Hubert enlisted in the Army, training at Camp Cody, NM and later sent to France serving with the 109th Engineers, Company B, 34th Division. He was engaged in hospital construction work in France and was sent to Sorbonne University in Paris, France for a term of 4 months schooling in art. He was discharged July 21, 1919 and upon return to the U.S., he resumed his art studies at the K.C. Art Institute and worked at the K.C. Star and Times in K.C., MO in the art dept. He remained there until 1932 when he became a free lance artist and devoted his time to becoming a wood engraver with his studio in the old historic Westport section of K.C., MO. He never married.

During the absence of Luther during WW II, E. Hubert returned to Russell to assist in the family business, remaining until his death in 1967. At this time, the Deines Brothers Funeral Home had been contracted by the US Army to dispose of all casualities during Army training flights from the Walker Army Air Base, 9 miles west of Russell.

He died in 1967, leaving a legacy of wood engravings to be enjoyed by many for years to come and fulfilling his dream to be among those listed in Who's Who in American Art. His work is displayed in many notiable art galleries in the US and the Library of Congress.
