Clippings......Sept 2, 1965........Pictured ...Mrs. Vivian Baxter, Russell, joins the staff at Ft. Hays College this fall as an instructor in the division of physical science........A native Kansan, receiving her early education in Ottawa Co., graduating from Minneapolis H.S. She holds a degree in general science and a master's degree in phychology from K State and a specialist in education degree from Ft. Hays this summer. Her major was mathematics. She has taught in elementary, secondary and most recently in Russell Co. rural schools and Gorham Rural H.S.

Mary Vivian Baxter, daughter of Burt and Virginia (Logsdon) Nickels was born Jan. 19, 1912 at Niles, KS. Her death occurred Feb. 27, 1990 in the St. Francis Medical Center, Wichita, KS at the age of 78 years, 1 month, and 8 days.

Vivian, as all her friends knew her, lived her early life in the Bennington and Minneapolis communities, moving to Manhattan after the death of her father. She received both her Bachelor and Masters Degrees in four years, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1932. She was united in marriage to George F. Baxter on Dec. 26, 1934 at Manhattan, KS. This union was blessed with three children: Virginia, Jim and Bette.

She began her teaching career at Glasco, KS coming to Russell in 1939. During the time George was in the military service, she lived in Manhattan, returning to Russell in 1946. She taught in the Lincoln Rural School for several years as well as Gorham High School. Her last years of teaching were in the Math Dept. of Ft. Hays State University where she retired in 1982.

Vivian was very active in her community and church. She served in numerous capacities in the Trinity United Methodist Church, UMW and was a very dedicated worker at the Family Thrift Center operated by the Methodist Women Circles. She was active in the Russell Hospice group, Leadership Russell, The Pride Yard of the Month, Foreign mission on Education for Parenthood, The Assoc. of University Women, and a number of Education Assoc. For several yeas she served her community as a member of the USD 407 School Board and was president for a period of time.

She was Preceded in death by her parents. Survivors are her husband, George of the home in Russell; son, Jim, of Wichita; 2 daughters, Virginia Wright of Richmond, KY; and Bette Heugel, Denver, CO; sister Mildred Cortright, Manhattan, KS and 2 grandchildren, Suzanne and Laura Baxter.
