Virginia Baxter Wright, PhD. May 21, 1939 - Sept. 21, 2015

Virginia Baxter Wright 76 retired economics professor at Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond, KY, died Monday, Sept. 21, 2015 at Wilson Health Care Center, Asbury Methodist Village, Gaithersburg, MD.

Virginia was born in Concordia (KS) to Vivian and George F. Baxter. She grew up in Russell (KS) where her parents were educators. Her father taught high school business, coached various athletic teams and was Vice-Principal. Her mother was a substitute teacher at the local elementary, middle and high school levels before becoming a math professor at Ft. Hays State University.

After graduating from R.H.S. in 1957, she attended Kansas State University and received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1961.

After moving to Washington, D.C., she earned her PhD. in economics from George Washington University in 1971. She married J. Ward Wright, PhD. in 1973 in Conifer, CO.

Dr. Wright taught Principles of Economics and Health Economics at Eastern Kentucky University for 18 years and retired in 2000. After retirement, she moved back to the D.C. area.

She is survived by her brother Jim (Gail) Baxter, Winter Park, FL; sister Elizabeth "Bette" Huegel of York, NE; nieces Suanne Baxter, San Francisco, CA and Laura (Scott) Harrison, Kentfield, CA; great nephews Elliott and Grant, Kentfield; six stepchildren and seven grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents and husband.

Burial was Saturday, Sept. 26, in Richmond Cemetery, Richmond, KY. (Published in the Oct. 1, 2015 issue of the Russell Co. News)
