Clara moved from her birthplace, London, Ontario, Canada to Kansas with her father Otto and siblings following the death of her mother Jane Fairbrother. Her grandparents Carl and Otilda Kannengiesser were already living near Canada, a small community in rural Marion County, as were several aunts and uncles including her mother's brother John Lardner Fairbrother with his wife Martha and their young family. Following her uncle's death, her father married Martha Hope, John Lardner Fairbrother's widow. Clara spent much of her childhood with her grandparents and her aunt Clara, then worked in the Thomas Winkley household. She married their son James Henry Winkley on June 1, 1898. Her husband and his brother Charles owned numerous businesses, among them the first telephone exchange in Aulne and first Ford dealership in Marion, Kansas. Clara, James and their 4 children, Alice, Grace and twins Earl and Ernest, moved to town following a farming accident in which James lost vision in one eye. According to daughter Alice the move was made on Charles Winkley's wedding day as the family had previously shared the home built by Thomas Winkley. The couple spend their remaining years in the family home immediately west of the Catholic Church on Sherman Street in Marion. Her grandchildren fondly recall the spicy, musty smell of her pantry with its wonderful treats as well as the built-in shelves just inside the front door, where behind a floral curtain, jigsaw puzzles and Chinese checkers were hidden.

I visited this cemetery April 2012 and it was well kept.
