Nancy was the daughter of Robert and Melissa B. Anthony Hughes. She married Samuel Smiley on December 12, 1869 in Morgan Co, MO. From this union were born ten known children: Bessie Cordelia, John Lee, Robert M, Bert O, Nellie J, Emma M, Hugh W, Sally G and two infants.

Mrs. Nannie Smiley died at her home in Stover, Saturday, January 14, at 5 a.m. death being due to heart trouble and gall stones. She was 75 years old. Her husband died a number of years ago and she is survived by seven children as follows; John of Australia; Bert of Texas; Hugh of Versailles; Mrs. Jake Morris, Mrs. John Wahlers, Mrs. Geroge Berkstreser and Mrs. Orva Sanford, of near Versailles and Stover. She is also survived by four sisters, Mrs. Mattie Todd and Mrs Parks of Stover, Mrs. Cal Long of Versailles and Mrs. Kanenbley of near Florence. Mrs. Smiley was a good christian woman and she will be greatly missed as a worker in the Stover Baptist church of which she was a faithful member. She was a faithful worker in the Ladies Aid and was also a Sunday school teacher. Funeral services were held Monday at the Baptist church and the remains were laid to rest in the Mt. Nebo cemetery.
