Eliza was a daughter of Alexander Dempster and Mary Stewart. In 1885, at the age of 20, Eliza married Daniel W. Delling, son of William Delling and Mary Watrous. Eliza was thirty years younger than Daniel.

Daniel had previously been married to Mary E. MacMichael, daughter of David and Diantha MacMichael. Daniel and Mary had four known children before they divorced in 1882:

1) Ellen Delling (b. 1864);
2) Sophronia Delling (b. 1866);
3) (Infant Son) Delling (b. 1867)
4) Andrew Delling (b. 1868).

Daniel and Eliza had five known children:

1) Clarence Watrous Delling (1886-1966), whose first wife was Olive Marion Johnson, and whose second wife was Dorothy May (Davis) Jacob;
2) Gladis Delling (b. 1888);
3) Iva Mae Delling (1895-1985), who married Donald B. Atwood;
4) Auer "Essie" Delling (b. 1898), who married Samuel Alcock;
5) Charles W. Delling, Sr. (1901-1975), whose first wife was Margaret Elizabeth White, and whose second wife was Ruth C. Joseph.

Daniel passed away at the County Home in Almer Township, Tuscola County, Michigan on July 7, 1904. His death certificate lists him as the father of nine children, seven of whom were living at the time of his death. He is also listed as a widower, whereas his second wife Eliza was still living.

Daniel's first wife, Mary MacMichael, passed away in 1894 and is buried with Daniel in the Indianfields Township Cemetery in Caro, Michigan.

On August 5, 1905 Eliza married James Dougherty in Bay City, Bay County, Michigan. Eliza was 40 at the time of her marriage to James. They had one child, Ellen Lucille Dougherty, who later married ________ Byers.

Eliza passed away in Otisville, Genesee County, Michigan in February 1934. Her second husband, James Dougherty, died in 1955 at the age of 104.
