In 1944, Helen and her family moved to Provo where she was a 1950 graduate of Provo High School. It was in Provo that she met her life-long love, Elvin Lee Brown. Helen and Elvin were married on April 12, 1950 in Nephi, UT. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
In 1961, Helen, Elvin and their five children moved to Lander, Wyoming where, over the years, they had five additional children. The family moved to Nevada in 1988 and lived in Winnemucca, Carlin, and Elko. In 1997, Elvin and Helen returned to southern Utah, an area she loved for its natural beauty and heat.
She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Diligent and conscience with all of her church callings, she was honored to serve as the Relief Society President and she continued with her visiting teaching until her failing health precluded it. Helen loved the gospel and taught those around her through her fine example.
Helen had an affinity for the outdoors, which brought her peace and happiness. She loved to camp, hike, and paint while breathing in the fresh air. Always with a song in her heart, she would sing while she completed activities around the home. Her children will remember her voice, of which the Tabernacle Choir did not have the privilege of her membership, with fondness. She was an accomplished quilter and seamstress who spent many late night hours sitting at her sewing machine, humming a tune while sewing everything from prom, homecoming, and wedding gowns, to curtains and doll clothes.
Helen was a devoted and loving wife, mother, sister, grandma, and friend. She will be remembered as an amazingly talented and selfless woman, and for the integrity of her character-her honesty, fairness, and unwavering faith.
Helen is survived by her ten children: daughters, Connie Hansen (Jim) of Los Lunas, NM; Vicky Nielson (Boyd) of Spring Creek, NV; Joanne Roper (Trevor) of Berthoud, CO; Joyce Nickerson (Robert) of Ft. Mohave, AZ; Michelle Christiansen (Scott) of Elko, NV; Holly Anderson (Arthur) of Sparks, NV; Shannon Brown (Addison) of Reno, NV; and sons, Elvin Dale Brown (Diane) of Casper, WY; Jeffery Glen Brown of Ivins, UT; and Scott Eugene Brown (Heather) of Elko, NV. Other survivors include her mother-in-law, Elva Hambleton Brown of American Fork, UT; sisters, Corrine Pugh of Washington, UT and Elaine Peters of American Fork, UT; and her brother Ronald Herman (Lanise) of Pleasant Grove, UT. Helen has 23 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to her dear friends and neighbors in Padre Lakes, a community of fixed incomes but million dollar friendships; and to Applegate Home Care & Hospice for their outstanding care and compassion
