Harriet H. Southard was born May 9th, 1802 and died in this village August 12th, 1891, aged 89 years, 3 months and 3 days. Mrs. Southard moved with her husband and family to this township in 1836, settling at what is known as the Southard homestead four miles south of this village where they lived until Mr. Southard's death in October, 1864. Mrs. S. still continued to reside at the old home until about 3 years ago, making her continued residence in this township of 65 years, she being at the time of her death the oldest person in this vicinity. She was always known as an honest, frugal, hard-working woman, one who endured the privation and hardship of a pioneer in its broadest sense. She was universally respected by all who knew her and her acquaintances were her true and warm friends. She was the mother of seven children, three of whom survive her, all being at the funeral, which was held at the Heath schoolhouse yesterday afternoon, Elder L. W. Spayd officiating. The burial was in the family lot in the cemetery near her old home where her husband and three children are buried. This death removes the last settler in this vicinity who came to the state while it was yet a territory.
