John was a twin to Larry Gillen
Child of Luke Gillen & Bridget Burns
John worked for the railroad and relocated to Kentucky about 1880

John married Ellanora Thomas (daughter of Joseph Warren Thomas & Jemima Elizabeth Dunn) in 1884 in Elizabethtown, Hardin, Kentucky. Their 1st child was Larry (1885), their 2nd was Michael (1887), their 3rd was Joseph (1890). Ellanora died from childbirth fever after delivering Joseph who shortly thereafter also died. John, widowed, remarried to Josephine A. "Josie" Williams (daughter of Noah Luke Williams & Lydia Ann Thomas) in 1890 in St. John, Hardin, Kentucky. Less than a year later, John Patrick Gillen died.

From the Louisville Courier Journal, Louisville, Kentucky, 17 August 1891, page 8: An Engineer Dead -- John Gillen, an engineer on the Chesapeake and Ohio railroad, died yesterday morning of inflammation of the bowels. He lived at 1?36 [this is how it is printed in the notice] West Kentucky street, and had been sick only three days. A wife and two children survive him. The body will be sent to Bethlehem Ky., for burial.

NOTE: The "wife and 2 children" is taken to mean 2nd wife Josie, and his sons Larry and Michael by 1st wife Ellanora. The burial location of "Bethlehem" is taken to mean the then railroad stop on the C. & O. Rail Road S. W. called "Bethlehem", near Bethlehem Academy in St. John. He had previous connections to St. John, and St. John's church, but no known connection to Bethlehem, Henry Co., Kentucky. Burial records for Henry County have no Gillens. No burial records from 1891 for this (St. John) cemetery are known to exist as of 2011.

From the Louisville Times, Louisville, Kentucky, 17 Aug 1891. p. 4: John Gillen, an engineer on the C. and O., died of inflammation of the bowels, at 1236 West Kentucky street.

The Herald, Piedmont, West Virginia, Friday 21 August 1891: John P. Gillen of Louisville, Ky, brother of Larry Gillen of this place, died last Sunday and was buried at that place Wednesday.
