Civil War Union Army Soldier. He was the first Union Army soldier to be killed by a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. A Private in the "Grafton Guards," a Militia unit raised in (soon to be West) Virginia's Taylor County, he was returning to the town of Grafton, Virginia after recruitment duty with a comrade and encountered Confederates performing picket duty near the bridge in the town of Fetterman, Virginia. Ordered to halt by the rebels, Private Brown responded by shooting at the Confederates, wounding Private Daniel Knight. Private Knight then returned fire and shot T. Baily Brown dead, making him the first Union casualty. Originally interred in his family's burial plot, he was removed to the Grafton National Cemetery in 1903, and a monument was erected where he fell. His unit, the Grafton Guards, eventually became Company B of the 2nd West Virginia Volunteer Infantry.
