Husband of Maude B. (Clark) Arnold (1882-1964). James married Maude Clark on January 7, 1903 in New York, Wayne County, Iowa. The couple moved to Gettysburg and later to Colome where he was engaged in freighting. In 1917, they moved to Washabaugh County, east of Longvalley, where he had since been engaged in ranching. Surviving are a daughter Dorothy (Mrs. Hiram Woodard) of Longvalley. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1964, a son Dwight in infancy, four sisters and four brothers.

James' daughter, Dorothy Irene (Arnold) Woodard died four months after he did. She died October 20, 1972 in Long Valley, Jackson, South Dakota. James was the son of Edward W. Arnold and Sophia (Barnhart) Arnold.
