Johnson was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Confederate States of America, serving with Co. F and S, 2nd Battalion Kentucky Mounted Rifles. His death notice appeared in The Clay City Times (Clay City KY) on April 12, 1906.
"Col. Thomas Johnson, an old Confederate soldier and a member of the Confederate Congress, died in Mt. Sterling Tuesday, aged ninety three years."
