John S. Lukowski, 97, born in Syracuse, NY, on October 24, 1914, to Anthony and Anna Gocek Lukowski, passed away peacefully Saturday. John was a graduate of Central High School, where he played football and was in the sectional football games in Miami 1933 (Miami HS won) and Tampa 1934 (Central HS won). He was a graduate of Alfred University. John was a veteran of WWII, serving in the South Pacific as a sergeant in the United States Army Air Force. He was a communicant of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, member of the Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus 6282, Polish Legion of American Veterans Post 14, past national youth director national Zone I commander, and held office on state and local levels, and was an avid New York Yankees, Duke basketball and Coach K fan. John retired as director of the Hamilton Street Boys Club and was associated with Charlie Hollis and Hollis Funeral Home for almost 30 years. John was predeceased by his beloved wife, Stella, and son, Richard "Luke." He is survived by his son, Larry (Donna) Lukowski; grandchildren, Christopher (Christine) Lukowski, Lindsay (Derrick Tolbert) Lukowski and Lucia Lukowski; and brother, Ed Lukowski. Calling Hours: 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hollis Funeral Home, 1105 W. Genesee St., Syracuse. Funeral Services: 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hollis Funeral Home and 9:30 a.m. in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Entombment with military honors will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum, DeWitt. The family requests instead of flowers to please donate to the Sacred Heart Basilica Renovation Fund, 927 Park Avenue, Syracuse, NY 13204. He will always be OUR DZIADZI!!!
