∼Born 13 November 1919 in Sauk Centre, MN; Othmar was the fifth of nine children {seven sons & two daughters} born to John Alvis & Susanna (Heinen) Braun.

He died 4 May 1945, about 30 miles west of the Island of Okinawa when his ship, the USS Luce (DD-522) was sunk after being hit by a Japanese kamikaze airplane, which crashed into the ship near Othmar's battle station – a 40 millimeter gun located amidships.

Seaman First Class Othmar Braun & 148 shipmates were killed or declared missing-in-action/lost at sea when the ship sank approximately four minutes after impact.

Othmar was age 25 & never married.

Othmar enlisted in the Navy on 25 May 1944, went to recruit training at the Great Lakes Naval Base for six weeks, took a short furlough in the summer, and then went to additional training in Idaho in July 1944 before reporting aboard his only ship on 23 August 1944. He participated in the invasions of the Leyte Gulf and Luzon in the Philippines.

In a February 1944 letter home, "Had a few air attacks, but it wasn't much,"wrote Othmar. He also reported visiting New Guinea, New Britain, and Manus Island (all part of present-day Papua New Guinea and sailing south of the equator.

NOTE: His name now lives on at the Othmar Braun American Legion Post #612 in Lake Henry, which was organized in April 1947.

Urban Spanier, a founding member of that post, said they took the name to remember Othmar and are proud to have kept his memory alive through their name. A bronze military marker has been placed at Saint Margaret Parish Cemetery in Lake Henry, MN; in the family plot, alongside his parents.
