After his death his South Carolina presented his eldest brother with a Sword, under a Resolution of the Legislature of December, 1852: "That among the sons of South Carolina who, by their distinguished valor and military skill in the Mexican War, acquired renown for themselves, and adorned her annals, she cherishes with peculiar pride and affection the memory of Brevet Captain Stuart."
