OBERLIN -- Philip Niemeth, 82, of Herndon, died Monday (March 1, 2004) at Decatur County Hospital in Oberlin.

He was born March 29, 1921, to Henry and Elizabeth (Versch) Niemeth on the family homestead near Herndon. He attended grade school at St. Mary's Catholic School.

On Dec. 28, 1948, he married Laverne Janousek.

He served in the Army from July 13, 1942-Jan. 4, 1946.

He was a member of St. Mary's Assumption Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus No. 1845 and VFW Post No. 1368, all of Herndon and American Legion Post No. 70 of Oberlin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Thomas Niemeth; five brothers, Louis, Walter, Robert, Henry and Ralph; and two sisters, Eleanor Whittaker and Henrietta Niemeth.

Survivors include his wife, Laverne of Herndon; three children, Janice and husband, Steve Alexander of Denver, Colo., Gerald and wife, Kim Niemeth of Herndon and Cynthia Bergling of Herndon; brother, Francis Niemeth of Denver; sister, Veronica Orin of Ruidoso Downs, N.M.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial is Thursday, 10 a.m., at St. Mary's Assumption Catholic Church in Herndon with the Rev. Damian Richards officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Herndon.

A parish vigil and Knights of Columbus rosary is today, 6 p.m., at the church.

Visitation is today, 1-4 p.m., at Williams Funeral Home and after 5 p.m., at the church and prior to service time.
