Richard W. Gilliam, 72, an active sportsman who enjoyed golf, baseball, hunting, and fishing, died Monday, Dec. 20, 1999.

He is survived by his wife, Jane M. Gilliam; two sons, Randy Gilliam, and his wife, Cindy, and Dean Gilliam, and his wife, Millie; a sister, Elsie Taylor, and her husband, George; four grandchildren, Ryan, Erin, Angie and Tara Gilliam.

He graduated from Matthew Whaley School and Augusta Military Academy and attended Purdue University. He was an active member of the Colonial Virginia Model A Club of America and served as a Williamsburg volunteer fireman. Mr. Gilliam was a member of the 11th Airborne Division and served as a paratrooper with the Occupational Forces in Japan during World War II. He retired in 1989 after 37 years with Colonial Williamsburg, where he was supervisor of MOM. He was also a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church.

A funeral service will be conducted at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, Dec. 22, at 1:30 p.m. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 37895 Strawberry Plains Road.
