He held many Olympic and amateur honors: 1984 Olympic Champion, 1983 World Champion, 3-time World Silver Medalist, 2-time World Bronze Medalist, 1986 Goodwill Games Champion, 1987 Pan American Games Champion, 4 time World Cup Champion. Other honors include: Outstanding Freestyle Wrestler at the 1984, 1987 and 1993 United States Nationals and the 1981 AAU Nationals. He was preparing for the 1996 Olympics when he was shot to death in his driveway.
