His natural father, Lawrence Adkins, died when Lawrence was three years old thus his father's sister and her family kept him and raised him.
He was reunited with his natural brother and sister, Jesse James Adkins of Jacksonville N.C. and Nanny Ruth Marcum of Whitley County Ky., who were raised by his natural mother in 1995. By that time his natural mother Savannah had also passed away and he had very few memories of his natural parents or siblings.
A member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, he attended East Texas Elementary School and Washington County High School. He served in the U.S. Army as a SPC 4 (Specialist)from Aug. 22, 1965 til his honorable discharge on March 27th, 1968 stationed at the NATO Headquarters in Ismir, Turkey.
He was employed by General Electric in Louisville Kentucky for over 20 years. He worked in Building 5 at Appliance Park for the majority of that time.
He was the proud father of Sheila Rose of Bardstown Ky.,born unto his first wife Hulya of Ismir Turkey. Lisa Dawn of Walterboro S.C. born unto his 2nd wife Alma Arlene Smith of Springfield Ky.,Lawrence, III. of Florida and an adopted daughter Charidy Hope of Bowling Green Ky. born unto his last wife Brenda Lee Tapscott of Danville Ky.
Also a proud grandfather of Megan and Eli, Sheila's children and Joseph, Caleb and Jordan, Lisa's sons.
Lawrence died on January 16, 1997 after a period of suffering Multiple Myeloma Cancer at Baptist East Hospital in Louisville Ky. He was buried on the 19th of January 1997 at Bethlehem Baptist Church with services provided by Carey & Son Funeral Home in Springfield Ky.
He avidly enjoyed Bowling, Billiards, and Poker. He always said that bad things happened to him on the 19th and he was buried on the 19th. It was a cold winter day the day he was buried at Bethlehem. The snow gently fell covering the ground while family and friends surrounded his earthly body to bid him one last farewell.
He was buried with photos of and letters from his loved ones and is greatly missed.
