Indiana Governor. He attended an academy in Greensboro, North Carolina, studied medicine in Kentucky, moved to Indiana, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1833 and commenced to practice law in Bloomington. He was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives, (1833-36), a member of the Indiana State Senate, (1836-40) and served as the Lieutenant Governor of Indiana, (1846-48). In 1848, he was elected as a Democrat the 9th Governor of Indiana, serving until 1849. Refusing to take another public office, he practiced law until his death at age 78.
