Tom Witcher, of Kingman, was a boy of 15 in Carroll county, Missouri, when he and the other boys old enough to be soldiers, were rounded up into Bill Anderson's company in 1864. That portion of Missouri was largely on the Southern side,............In the early stages of the war Bill Anderson (know as 'Bloody Bill') had done a lot of damage in Northern Missouri and in Kansas. He was with Quantrill when the latter made his famous raid on Lawrence in the summer of 1863....... His work in 1864, while Witcher was with him from May to October, consisted mainly of harassing small detachments of Union troops passing back and forth, interfering with supply trains, once in a while smashing up a Union camp and foraging in Union territory.......Witcher was present when Anderson was killed in action at New Albany, Missouri.
***I put this article here and on the memorial for my great grandfather, since my great grandfather's town was one of the towns 'foraged' by Anderson's men. My husband is great grandson of Thomas Witcher.*****
