She was born in Marietta, Ohio, on March 16, 1915, to John and Virginia (Schilling) Arnold. (Her birthname is Dorothy.) She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1933, and made her Profession of Vows in 1936.
Sr. Maria received her B.S. from St. Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University) and her M.S. Ed. in library science from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. In the Steubenville Diocese, she taught at Holy Name, Steubenville (1949-54) and at St. Mary, Marietta (1963-64). Sister also ministered in the Columbus Diocese and in Connecticut, Michigan, and Pennsylvania as either a teacher or librarian. Sr. Maria served as faculty librarian at Newark Catholic High School, Newark, Ohio (1977-2000). She retired and did supportive service at the Motherhouse before coming to Mohun Health Care Center in 2004
Sister was preceded in death by brothers, William, George, Jerry and Anthony; a sister, Bertha, and brothers-in-law, John Huck and Joseph Lang. She is survived by a brother, James (Maglena); and sisters, Mary Lou Huck, Allene (Vincent) Huck and Irene Lang. Sisters-in-law, Mildred (William), Catherine (George), Leora (Anthony), and Lillian (Jerry) Arnold. Sr. Maria will be missed by additional family members, especially her niece, Sr. Catherine Arnold, O.P., of St. Mary of the Springs; as well as by cousins, nieces and nephews and many friends
The viewing will be in the Motherhouse today from 3 to 4:30 p.m. A Vigil Service of Remembrance will take place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. that day with wake continuing until 6:30 p.m. The funeral liturgy will be on Wednesday at 9 a.m. followed by burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Memorial gifts in Sister's memory may be sent to Dominican Sisters, St. Mary of the Springs, 2320 Airport Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43219.
