Richard Edward Tarrell, son of Samuel and Rosina Tarrell, was born May 15, 1856, in the township of Paris, in Grant county, Wisconsin, and died July 9, 1942, at the Brookings hospital, Brookings, South Dakota, at the age of 86 years, 2 months and 4 days.
He was united in marriage to Ann Thomas, daughter of Ambrose and Mary Thomas, on June 17, 1874. (should be 1877) To this union seven children were born – R. J. Tarrell, Bruce South Dakota, L. A. Tarrell, Milwaukee, Wis., S. L. Tarrell, Vale, S.D., W. R. Tarrell, Canistata, S. D., R. H. Tarrell, Darlington, Wis., Lottie Isabel Tarrell, Darlington, Wis and Gladys Rosinna Tarrell, Darlington, Wis.
His wife, two daughters and one one son, S. L. Tarrell, preceded him in death.
Mr. Tarrell was a blacksmith by trade and followed that business for 14 years in Elk Grove, Wis. He was chairman of the school board in the village of Elk Grove, and a member of the town board for several years, and as chairman of the board represented the township on the county board of Lafayette county for several years. He was also town treasure of the township of Elk Grove for several years, and was elected sheriff of Lafayette county in 1894, and served as sheriff in 1895 and 1896 after his term of office expired he bought a furniture and undertaking stock and was in that business for 15 years.
He was elected member of the legislature in 1903 and again in 1905, serving his term as representative of Lafayette county.
In 1909 he went to South Dakota and located on a homestead 17 miles northeast of Newell, South Dakota, and resided there until the spring of 1919, when he moved to Empire district in the township of Vale, S. D. In the fall of 1923 he moved to a farm near Esteline in the eastern part of South Dakota. And in 1925 moved back to Empire in the township of Vale, S. D. Since the death of his wife in March 29, 1931, he has been living with the son, R. J. Tarrell, at Bruce, South Dakota and his granddaughters, Mrs. Alvin Preston, Canistata, S. D. and Mrs. John C. Clark, Bushnell, S. D.
Funeral services were held at nine Saturday morning at the Rude funeral home in Brookings, S. D.
Final rites were held in Vale S. D., where h was laid to rest beside his wife and son. One son, R. J. Tarrell, of Bruce, S.D. accompanied the body to Vale, S. D.
