Born in Tennessee on Feb. 11, 1807, Abraham Hamilton was a son of John and Catherine (Spurgeon) Hamilton.
His early life is recorded in an article from a Danville newspaper dated May 1, 1924: "Near Blountsville, Tennessee, lived the family of John Hamilton. He had married Catherine Spurgeon. John Hamilton died about 1830. Catherine Hamilton and most of her ten children made the long journey over the mountains in a wagon and settled near Hadley, Indiana in 1833. In 1835 she and her son, Abraham, and one or two daughters moved to Union Township. Here Abraham entered 120 acres of land. On October 17, 1839, he married Fanny Clark, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Ragland) Clark of near Mt. Pleasant church. They had come from Clark county, Ky. In a little cabin on their farm, was born a daughter to Abraham and Fanny Hamilton, on June 13, 1841. They named her Elizabeth. When she was about ten years old, her father built a double log house of hewn logs. The Lebanon and Danville road (now Indiana 39) was the first road surveyed in the township (Union Township) excepting the State road (now US 136), and this was one of the first houses built on this road."
As mentioned above, Abraham Hamilton was one of the pioneers of Union Township entering 80 acres in 1837 and 40 acres in 1849, all in Section 4. The book, So Brief A Frontier, by Don Hall records he was a crack deer hunter.

"Abraham came to Hendricks County in 1832 from Tennessee." From page 323 of the same book: "Abraham and Fannie (Clark) Hamilton were early settlers in Union Township, coming in 1834 from Tennessee. Abraham entered land southeast of Lizton for which he paid $ 1.25 per acre. Fannie died in 1871. Abraham died in 1891."
Abraham and Fannie were the parents of nine children: Elizabeth (1841-1925), Catherine (1842-1923), Sarah (1843-1852), Joan (1844-1853), Mary (1849-1863), John Wesley (1850-1925), Ellen Jane (1853-1887), Julia (1854-1854) and Margaret Edna (1858-1924).
