Young Havre Woman Dies in Early Morning Crash
Havre--A young Havre woman was killed and her companion seriously injured early Thursday when the car in which they were riding collided with the rear of a stalled station wagon near the Havre city limits, one quarter mile east of the city's edge.
Killed in the crash was Mrs. Louanne Halvarson Loftus, 21, a passenger in a car driven by Kenneth Robert Martin, 32, a Northern Montana College student from Wolf Point. Martin suffered severe head and chest injuries. State patrolman, Lemm said seat belts probably would have saved Mrs. Loftus and prevented Martin from suffering serious injuries. The woman died almost instantly of head injuries suffered when she was thrown against the windshield of the car. Investigators said speed was not a factor. Martin apparently failed to see the lighted station wagon driven by Frederick Barr pulled halfway off the highway after it stalled because of engine failure.
Mrs. Loftus was born May 5, 1941, in Havre and married Ronald Loftus Oct. 12, 1957, in Havre. Other survivors include two children, Louinda Ann, 4, and Delina Marie, 1; her father, Perry V. Halverson, Great Falls; her mother, Mrs. Donald Campbell, Havre; three sisters, Mrs. James Aainesworth, Sacramento, Calif.; Mrs. Eugene Terpko, Ashville, Ohio; and Sheila Rae Halverson, Sacramento; four brothers, Gaylord and Robert Halverson, Great Falls; Richard, Birmington, Iowa; and Clifford in the Navy at San Diego.
