John was born to Virgil Perry Halverson and Agnes Kristine Mork Halverson Campbell in Chinook, Blaine County, Montana. He was the oldest son of 8 children. Siblings were Martha Olive, Robert Howard, Beverly Jean, Richard Virgil, Agnes Louanne, Clifford Allan and one living sister. John was married twice and the father of six children.
He joined the US Navy in June of 1952 to June of 1956. He lived in Oklahoma for many years, returning to Montana where he lived in Christina, Lewistown, and Billings.
