CHESAPEAKE - Dr. Stanley H. Powell, MD, 94, of the 2000 block of Ames Circle North, and formerly of Portsmouth, passed away Sept. 27, 2001. He was born May 6, 1907 in Newport News to the late Henry Alexander Powell and Mattie Goddin Powell. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1924. He then attended Emory & Henry College where his uncle Noah Hillman was president. He continued his studies at William & Mary College where he majored in chemistry and became a member of Sigma Pi Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi. He received his Bachelor's degree in chemistry from William & Mary in 1928. He then attended the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) where he received his Degree in Medicine in 1932. While at MCV, he was inducted into the Phi Psi Chapter of Phi Beta Pi. After completing his internship in 1932 at the Hospital of St. Vincent DePaul, Norfolk, he set up his practice in the community of Cradock in Portsmouth. He achieved one of the longest medical practices, 63 years, in the history of the city. Other achievements include his rising to the rank of first lieutenant in the Medical Corps in the U.S. Army in 1932. For his service to the country during World War II, he received a Special Certificate of Appreciation from then President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1967. Dr. Powell continued to serve the community's medical needs until his retirement in 1997, having given 63 years of his life to his profession and his community.

Dr. Powell is survived by his wife, Mavis Russell Powell of the residence; two daughters, Katherine Louise Powell of Virginia Beach and Lacy Ransone Gibson and husband, David Lawrence Gibson of Chesapeake; three sons, Stanley Hobson Powell Jr. and wife, Debbie of Summerville, S.C., Thomas Henry Powell and wife, Betty Anne of Chesapeake and James Russell Powell of Portsmouth; two grandsons, Mark Lee Badger and wife, Madelyn of Rockville, Md., and Lucas Russell Powell of Chesapeake; and three great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Stuart and Andrew Badger; his sister, Florence Powell Adsit of Williamsburg, Va. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Margaret Powell Gatling and Alice Powell Reed and first wife, Alice Reineke Powell.

The viewing will be at Snellings Funeral Home, 5605 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth, Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 500 Court St., Portsmouth, at 10 a.m. Monday. The committal service will be held at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Williamsburg.
