John Copeland Smiley Farmer Killed in Wreck
John Copeland, 50 years old Smiley farmer and rancher, was killed instantly Tuesday evening when the car he was driving collided with a Walthrip ice cream truck driven by Willie Thomas Simper of Shiner,
Simper told local authorities that Copeland just seemed to pull his car into the path of the truck as they were meeting. The corner of the big truck just cut the side out of the Copeland machine and killed the Smiley man instantly, The accident occurred around 7 near the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Segrest close to Westoff.
Copeland's death was the fourth traffic fatality for the year for Gonzales county.
Last Rites Today
Last rites for the Smiley man will be held at 5 Wednesday afternoon from the Smiley Baptist church with the Rev. Charles Noble officiating. Interment will be in the Bundick cemetery.
Copeland was born and reared in the Smiley community. Besides his wife he is survived by his aged mother, Mrs. Earlie Copeland of Smiley, and six sisters and three brothers. The sisters are Mrs. C. Passmore, Mrs. Maggie Barnett, Mrs. Milt Robinson, Mrs. Frank Parker, and Mrs. Jim Bundick, all of Smiley; and Mrs. Neppie Freeman of Houston. Brothers are Ben Copeland of Houston and Jess and Sebe Copeland of Smiley.
Simper was uninjured, except for bruises and minor cuts. The accident was investigated by Sheriff L.O. McGinty, Dupty Doss Robinson, and State Patrolman James Schellhase.
