Philip Hammerand and his first wife, Anna Whitman, were married in Germany. Their first three children, Erhardt, John and Louise, were born there. They came to America in 1854 and had three more children, George, Henry and Ernest.

His first wife, Anna Whitman, died in 1872 at the age of 45. Philip always grew a large garden which he took to town ( butter, apples, eggs ) and sold to his customers. Here he met Magdalena Horstmann some 20 years his junior and married her in 1873. She was from Platteville, Wisconsin. They had one more daughter, Lena Hammerand, who married George Witter. Philip and his two wives are buried in the Methodist Cemetery in Sherrill, Iowa.
