Thomas Spence Died of Accidental Injuries Friday.

CAME TO WAUKESHA IN 1848.

Long a Prominent Figure Here... Other Mortuary Events.

Thomas Spence, who had resided in this city since 1848, and for more than half a century had been one of its widely known and active citizens, died at his home, 504 Madison street, last Saturday morning, from injuries sustained by a fall two days before. Mr. Spence fell from an opening in the second story of his sanitarium building which was formerly connected with the Hyde Park Hotel, recently razed, and sustained injuries to his hip and other internal injuries. He was eighty-three years of age. Funeral services were held at the Episcopal church Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. J. Lemon.

Mr. Spence was born near Belfast, Ireland, of Scotch parentage. He came to America in 1846, taught school in the city of Brooklyn, N.Y. for two yeras, and then came to Waukesha, which remained his home ever after. He was a civil engineer by profession, taught school two years during his early life, conducted a store for several years, conducted an insurance business, developed and managed the Horeb spring, built, and for a time managed, the Hyde Park Hotel. He erected a large number of residences in the city, and also a store and an office building. He was always active in public affairs and held a number of public offices -- county surveyor, town clerk, assessor, member of the school board and alderman. He represented his ward in the council at the time of his death.

Mr. Spence married in Ireland in 1848 Miss Jane Leslie, and five children were born to them. Mrs. Spence and all the sons and daughters survive, as follows: Judge Edward L., of Coluca, Ill.; Thomas H., of La Crosse, Wis., Richard L., of Lodi, Wis.; Mrs. Van H. Bugbee and Mrs. Harry Vedder of this city. All were here to attend their father's funeral.
