Pioneer founder of Melbourne, Australia. John Pascoe Fawkner was born near Cripplegate, London to John Fawkner and his wife Hannah Pascoe. At the age of 10 years old, he accompanied his convict father and his mother to Tasmania. His father had been sentenced to fourteen years for receiving stolen goods. The family prospered in Tasmania and in April 1835, John Fawkner purchased the topsail schooner, Enterprize, to search for a suitable settlement site in the Port Phillip District. On 15 August 1835, Enterprize entered the Yarra River. After being hauled upstream, she moored at the foot of the present day William Street. On 30 August 1835 the settlers disembarked to build their store and clear land to grow vegetables, thus founding the city of Melbourne. John Fawkner was active in the city's further growth. He opened its first hotel and founded two of its early newspapers. Many sites in Melbourne have been named for John Fawkner including Fawkner, Pascoe Vail, and Fawkner Park.
