Obituary- Josiah Armour, son of William and Elizabeth Wadkins Armour, was born in Grayson county, Kentucky, September 8, 1826, and moved with his parents to Illinois in the spring of 1830, settling about two miles east of the village. With the exception of about two years, when he resided at Upper Alton, he grew to manhood in this vicinity and received his education in the subscription schools at that time.

On January 15, 1846, he was married to Miss Eliza Rhoads, daughter of Henry Rhoads. To this union were born nine children, four of whom died in infancy. The surviving children are Mrs. Melissa D. Chandler, Josiah Andrew Armour, and Mrs. Julia Huffman, all of Nebraska. Charles Benjamin Armour and Mrs. Della Duty of the Medora vicinity. Mr. Armour and his young wife moved the American bottoms in 1847, where they resided three years. They returned and bought the 80-acre farm, at present the home place, at $1.25 per acre. Although Mr. Armour went in debt for a portion of the amount, it was only a few years until he had by great industry and sacrifice paid off all indebtedness and besides added to the property by the acquirement of about 630 acres with good buildings. In 1872 he moved to Upper Alton to educate his children. Three years and a half later they moved back to the home place, living there until 1890, when they moved to Medora and bought the home in which his death occurred January 21, 1908.
Mr. Armour made a profession of faith and joined the Mt. Pleasant Baptist church at Medora, then Rhoad's Point. In 1852. He with seventeen others, drew their letters, and organized the Harmony Baptist Church, of which he remained a member to the close of his life. In 1859 he was ordained a Deacon, filling this position faithfully. Mrs. Armour is now the only living original member of the Harmony church. She will reach her eightieth birthday next August. Mr. and Mrs. Armour had been married more than sixty years.

It was Mr. Armour's custom to spend one or two days in each week in church service, either at home or visiting other churches. Christianity was his first priority. He was in poor health for several years and often regretted that his advanced age would not permit him to be more active in church work. In his last illness he was anxious that the end might come. Assuring his aged companion and relatives gathered about him.
