He was raised in Bainbridge, Conoy Township, Lancaster County, but his birthplace is reported both as York County as well as Lancaster County. The son of John & Mary E. Albert, in 1860 he was a laborer presumably living in Newberry Township, York County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He is, however, in the 1863-65 draft registration residing in York Haven, York County. He stood 5' 4" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of thirty in Goldsboro, York County, August 15, 1864, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 23 as a private with Co. B, 200th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was not accounted for at muster-out, but his compiled military service records claim he honorably discharged May 30, 1865, the same date as the rest of his company.

He married Mary Jane LNU. and in 1890 was living in Highspire, Dauphin County, where he died ostensibly from stomach cancer.
