Gustaf Anderson, a pioneer resident of West Union township for 57 years, passed away at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 17 days at the Melrose hospital Sunday afternoon, Sept. 23, 1945. He had been taken there the preceding Sunday as he had been suffering from multiple myeloma, a rare bone disease for which there is no known cure. He had been to both Minneapolis and Rochester hospitals in hope of finding some help, but none could change his condition. Mr. Anderson was able to be up and around until about a week before his death but suffered much at times, and seldom complained.
Gustaf Anderson, son of Mons and Bothilda Anderson, was born June 6th, 1867 in Skone, Broby, Sweden. At the age of 21 he came to the United States and the township of West Union, where he has lived ever sicne. He was actively engaged in farming until a few years before his death. He farmed with his brother, Axel until his brother's death nearly threee years ago. Last spring he had sold his farm and was now making his home with his brother, Otto.
Surviving are two brothers and a sister; Karl, of Sweden; Otto, of West Union and Emma of Sweden. Other surviving relatives are; Three nephews in Sweden and two nieces here, namely, Mrs. Arnold Lawin, of Burtrum, and Mrs. Wm Boehne, of Sauk Centre. Preceding him in death were three brothers, Peter and Elof, of Sweden, and Axel with whom he farmed
Funeral Services were conducted Wednesday , Sept. 26th at 1:30 p.m. from the Sauk Centre Funeral Home. The Rev. Assen, of Elbow Lake officiated. Interment was in Silver Creek Cemetery. The pallbearers were; John Hector, David Beck, Otto Anerson and Herman Hultgren, of Sauk Centre, John Nelson of Osakis, and Andrew Hultgren of Fergus Falls.
Out of town relatives and friends were; John and Lena Peterson, of Alexandria, Mr. and Mrs. Andre Hultgren and Mrs. Minnie Mullen of Fergus Falls, Mrs. Ethelyn Hultgren, of Osakis, and Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Lawin and family of Burtrum.
