José Pedro Juan de los Angeles Chapman y Ortega was born at Los Angeles, Alta California, México, and baptized at Mission San Gabriel August 2, 1825 (SG Baptism 07340). He was the son of José Juan (Joseph John) Chapman and Guadalupe Ortega y Sánchez. His mother was the grand-daughter of Captain Francisco Ortega. He married Josefa Antonia Villa y Váldez at Reina de los Angeles (Plaza Church) on September 1, 1844 (book 2, entry 79; SG Marriage 01980). José and his wife appear at Los Angeles in the 1852 California Census and 1860 U.S. Census. He died at Los Angeles and was buried in the (Old) Calvary Cemetery. When the (Old) Calvary Cemetery was closed and condemned, his youngest daughter Senida had him reinterred at Woodlawn Cemetery in 1891 to rest near his wife, who had died earlier that same year. When Senida died in 1905 she was buried between her parents. He shares this grave with Ramona Valle y [?] de García (1854-1929).
