Frank (Francis) Jerome LANDON
Frank passed away peacefully on May 20, 2011 in Shoreline after a brief illness. He was born to John Vincent Landon and Lena Claire Grenier on November 5, 1914 at the family home on Queen Anne Hill. He attended Blessed Sacrament and Saint Patrick schools and in 1933 was valedictorian of the last class to graduate from Seattle College High School before it was renamed Seattle Preparatory School. He studied at the University of Washington and transferred to Saint Louis University where he graduated cum laude in biology in 1938. He finished his first year of medical school at Saint Louis University but circumstances forced him to return home. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi and Phi Beta Pi fraternities and was active in the Saint Louis University Alumni Club in Seattle for many years. He was hired in 1939 as chief clinical chemist and serologist at Northern State Hospital in Sedro-Woolley and it was there that he met and fell in love with Helen Louise Waddell. They were married in Bellingham in 1940. He joined the Naval Reserve, received his officer's commission in 1942 and served as a lieutenant in World War II. He was first stationed stateside as a shipyard inspector and later served as a communications and navigation officer in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. He returned home and went to work in pharmaceutical sales for Ayerst Laboratories and was named district manager in 1949. In that capacity, he led the way to establish Seattle as an Ayerst distribution center, hired and trained the first Ayerst sales representative in Hawaii, and introduced the medical community to landmark pharmaceutical products such as Premarin, Fluothane and Inderal. He retired from Ayerst in 1977 but came out of retirement for several years to manage the Moore Hotel and Theatre. He was a former member of Sand Point Country Club and the Lake City Elks. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Helen; his parents; and his brothers Narcisse, Gerard, George, Gregory and John. He is survived by his son John, Seattle; daughter Marcia, Seattle; son William Sr. and his wife Jodi, Puyallup; grandchildren William Jr., Seattle; Jason, Kennewick; and Serena and Hunter, Puyallup; as well as many nephews, nieces, cousins, and their families. Recitation of the Rosary will be today, Tuesday, at 7 p.m., and the Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, June 1, at 12 noon, BOTH at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 8900 35th Avenue N.E., Seattle. A reception after the Mass will be followed by entombment at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
