The son of Scottish Immigrants from Applecross, Farquhar was born in Boularderie, Victoria County Cape Breton. He married Jessie MacLeod in Boularderie on Christmas Day 1879 and together they had six children - John Philip MacRae d, Jessie Ann MacRae, Christina Mae MacRae, D. Roderick MacRae, Robert John MacRae and Frank (Farquhar) McRae.He served as a first lieutenant in the Second Regiment Victoria County Nova Scotia. He died at Southside River Denys, Cape Breton Nova Scotia.
