During the 1946 - 47 season, visiting American drivers Cal Niday and Perry Grimm befriended Dinny and influenced Patterson that he should try his luck in the U.S.
Dinny flew out of Australia on May 11, 1947. Patterson struggled on the strange tracks and the concept of time trials, with which he was unfamiliar. During his time trial at San Diego on May 30th, Dinny hit a rut, crashed through the retaining wall and impacted a concrete pillar. Dinny Patterson succumbed to his injuries at 4:45 am on June 3, 1947. Dinny was survived by his wife and two sons.
Dinny Patterson was cremated in the United States and his ashes were sent back to Australia.
