First Bishop of Montreal. Jean-Jacques Lartigue, only son of surgeon Jacques Lartigue and Marie Charlotte Cherrier, was baptized on June 21, 1777 at the Basilique Nôtre-Dame de Montréal. After completing a classical education in Philosophy in 1793, he enrolled in an English school run by the Sulpicians. Subsequently, he spent three years under the tutelage of a law firm and developed an interest in politics. However, in 1797, Lartigue made the decision to give up his promising career in law and instead concentrated on becoming a priest. He continued his theological study under the Sulpicians and was ordained as a priest on September 21, 1800. Lartigue was consecrated as an auxiliary bishop in Montreal on January 21, 1821. In 1936, Pope Gregory XVI created the diocese of Montreal and appointed him to it. Jean-Jacques Lartigue became the first Bishop of Montreal. He served as Bishop of Montreal until his death in 1840. He was buried at the then-unfinished Saint James Cathedral, later renamed as Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral, as was his successor Ignace Bourget.
