Rebecca Ann Hankins was born in Upper Township, Lawrence County Ohio to Daniel Hankins m Anna Collier. Second born of 10 children. She migrated to Madison County Indiana around 1830 with the Hankins and Collier families. In 1848 the Hankins family moved to Decatur County Iowa where she married James Carl Melton on 1 Oct 1848 in Fairfield, Jefferson County Iowa. Five of their children died early and are laid to rest in High Point Cemetery, High Point, Decatur Co. Iowa next to Rebecca's father, Daniel Hankins.
From Iowa they migrated to Kansas and settled in Attica, Harper Co Kansas.
Four daughters survived to adulthood. Emily Ann m Alexander Alfonzo Larkey, Josephine (Josie) m William Henry Kelly, Ida E. m Dan Bumgarner and Mary m Melburn H. Chapman who died at age 27 and remarried a Dennis Chapin.
According to James civil war records of Jan 15, 1898, it lists only three daughters living: Josephine b 22 May 1854, Ida b 27 Dec 1861 and Mary b 23 July 1866. Mary was born 22 Sep 1855 in Garden Grove, Iowa while her three sisters above were born in High Point, Iowa. Rebecca's five children were also born in Decatur Co Iowa. Martha J., Daniel, William A., Edwin and Viola.

Crystal Springs is where Melvin Cemetery lays in an open field. This is the resting place of James Carl Melton's mother, Martha Mendenhall died 1885.
