According to the Union Civil War records of James, he inlisted in Company A 34th Iowa Volunteer Inf. and Company D. He served with his nephew, William Jasper Beavers and Alexander Hankins, his brother-in-law who died 1n 1863. He also served with his other brother-in-law, Richard T. Baker who wed Sarah Jane Hankins husband who also died in the civil war.

James married Rebecca A. Hankins 1 Oct 1848 in Fairfield, Jefferson Co. Iowa. All of their nine children were born in Iowa.

From Iowa they migrated into Kansas with the Hankins and Beavers lines, where they settled in Attica, Harper Co. Kansas. His health failed him due to diabetes and other related illnesses. He was remembered by his children and stories and his civil war diary reflected his hardships while serving for the freedom of all our people of The United States.

It is not known who his father was or what become of him. It is not known if his mother remarried a Mendenhall or if it was her maiden name. In the 1850-1860 census of Decatur Co Iowa, you will find a Mendenhall families living near the Hankins families. This may be a lead for any researchers looking for that tree. Martha Mendenhall is buried in Melvin Cemetery, Crystal Springs, Harper Co Kansas where James is also buried. She died 1885.
