Benjamin Franklin Markert came to Atlanta to attend Georgia Tech, where he played football and learned architecture. After school he began as a draftsman with an architectural firm, then began working for himself as a general contractor. He progressed quickly and built many fine homes in Atlanta, including one for his own family near Emory University. He had married Volina Butler in 1907, daughter of James Jackson Butler and Bettie Winn.
