Clayton Henderson 89 passed away on Sunday January 22, 2012 in Big Lake, Texas. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday January 28, 2012 at the Garden City Cemetery.

Clayton was born on September 2, 1922 in Colorado City and married Dorothy Gregg on December 7, 1946 in Midland. They celebrated their 65th anniversary on December 7, 2011.

He graduated from Colorado City High School as valedictorian and attended Rice University for one year on a track scholarship. He volunteered in the United States Navy Air Force and also served in the United States Army. Clayton and Dorothy lived in Garden City where he was a partner in C&W Butane and then moved to the farm in north Reagan County in 1956. He was an oilfield pumper, farmer and rancher and served as a county commissioner for twelve years. After retiring, they lived in San Angelo until October 2011. Clayton was active in the Church of Christ first in Garden City then in Big Lake and San Angelo.

Clayton was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed playing cards and dominoes, hunting and fishing, playing basketball and softball and pitching washers and horseshoes. Always competitive, Clayton placed third in horseshoes at the National Senior Olympics in Louisville, Kentucky at age 85.

He is survived by the love of his life Dorothy; his sons Greg Henderson and wife Dayna of Merkel and Mark Henderson and wife Mary of Big Lake; his daughter Patti Grote and husband Craig of Mason; six grandchildren and three great grandsons Susan Netopski and husband Chris, Bryan Grote and wife Brandi, John Marc Henderson and wife Julie and sons Evan and Clay, Heather Henderson and son Garrett Portis, Sherri Wheeler and husband Tim and Heath Henderson and wife Heather and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be sent to the Concho Valley Food Bank; Garden City Church of Christ; Big Lake Church of Christ; or the West Texas Boys Ranch.
